A Structured Program for Kids on the Computer

Many summer programs for kids have computer time. Kids may be on several computers at the same time, or they may share one or two computers. If you are responsible for group computer time as a parent volunteer or worker in a summer program, you need a structured but fun plan for kids to get the most from summer computer play.

This eight-week plan starts with some typing and mouse practice, then moves into exploring "My Favorites...", a few fun learning games, creative correspondence, exploring the arts, and making a book. Each lesson includes online fun and a printable activity for extending the play offline.

Activity Links will guide you to the sites each week, so you don't have to do the searching. Suggestions for modifying the lesson and links to the best elementary sites will help you find additional sources easily. The plan is geared to children of varying ages in a group setting; but, you can use it at home with one or more children.

Bookmark this page to start each week. The plan is not geared to learning specific academic skills, but the children will learn valuable computer literacy, research skills, and positive activities to do on the computer. Let children work independently as much as possible. The suggested sites have lots of interesting places to explore and that's the fun of surfing!
