Building Night

Building projects are best saved for an evening when mom and dad are feeling very patient; but, the satisfaction of completing a building toy project is well worth waiting for. We've all experienced buying the construction toy that is a bit too hard for our child to complete on his own. He gets frustrated and loses interest. Before you know it, the pieces are lost and it's worthless. Instead, make it a fun project for everyone to work on until it's done.

This isn't the time for free-form building blocks or Legos. Your purpose for building night is to create something! So, choose a Lego, Megabloks, Erector, Rokenbok, K'Nex, or other construction set. Don't get one that is too complex unless you have an older, experienced child builder to help you. Don't worry too much if you don't complete the entire project in one evening. Leave it out for the entire weekend if that's what it takes.

Clear a large work space, and let your child organize the building pieces to get ready for the project. Turn off the TV to prevent frayed nerves during those moments when you are convinced that the thing cannot be built with the pieces you have. Some pleasant background music will help you keep your cool and enhance concentration. This is a great time for real conversation with your child, or just enjoy the silence while working together.

If your little one gets tired while the family is building, let her build a fort in the family room. A few sheets and blankets, a couch and some chairs, and some heavy books will keep her occupied with this kid-favorite activity. One parent might want to help, and then snuggle in with pillows and picture books while dad and big brother work on their project.

Family Building Night Food Ideas

. . . Building food, of course! Set out a sandwich tray and see who can build the most creative sandwich. Or, make it pizza toppings and build individual pizzas. You won't need food while you work on your building project; it will just be a distraction. But, you will probably need a break to stretch and start again with a fresh perspective. Feed your brains with some carbs, maybe bread pudding or a favorite cookie and milk.
